On viewLabel TextMaize was the most important crop for the Mesoamerican world for both its practical uses and spiritual associations. In the Mayan creation myth, the Popol Vuh, the creator deities created the first humans from Maize and the Aztec goddess of Maize, Chichimetcoatl, was closely associated with fertility and agricultural abundance. Women were responsible to prepare maize for consumption, while men were responsible for the planting of the crop. In this role they act like mothers. Just like a mother makes sure that their children were well fed for them to grow, Mesoamerican women made sure food was prepared so that society could thrive.
